Essential Oil Safety
Essential oils are completely natural but please don't mistake 'natural' for 'safe'. Don't get me wrong, essential oils are completely safe if they are used correctly. But there has been a tremendous influx of essential oil users, especially within the past few years, and not near enough information being given out about the proper and safe ways of using them.
Essential oils are highly concentrated. To put this in perspective, here are a few facts:
256 pounds of peppermint leaves make 1 pound of peppermint essential oil.
150+ pounds of lavender flowers make 1 pound of lavender essential oil.
Thousands of pounds of roses make 1 pound of rose essential oil.
Essential oils contain very highly concentrated properties of the plant they are derived from and need to be used carefully, with respect, and in the right amounts. It is very important to do your own research on the essential oils you are interested in using so you know the cautions you need to take to ensure you're using them safely.
In most cases, essential oils should never be put on the skin undiluted. There are exceptions, but as a general rule, it is safer to mix them with a carrier oil such as coconut or olive oil first. Most essential oils will burn your skin if applied neat (undiluted and straight from the bottle).
Essential oils being applied to the skin should be diluted in a 0.1 – 5% solution. Babies should never have a solution over 1%. It takes approximately 20 drops of essential oil to make 1ml. To make this easier, I will explain this in drops.
1 tsp of carrier oil (5ml) + 5 drops of essential oil = 5% solution
1 tsp of carrier oil (5ml) + 1 drop of essential oil = 1% solution
50ml of carrier oil + 5 drops of essential oil = 0.5% solution
50ml of carrier oil +1 drop of essential oil = 0.1% solution
Essential Oils are NOT all Created Equal
Most companies would have you believe that as long as an essential oil is 100% pure therapeutic grade, it is the best you can get. This is not true. There are other huge factors that go into obtaining a true high quality essential oil and they are, more often than not, overlooked.
The biggest contributor to the potency of the therapeutic benefits of an essential oil is where the plant is grown. The soil and environmental atmosphere play a huge role in this. If you grow a plant in a lab using a hydroponic system (only water and no soil), the potency of that plant is going to be significantly less than of the same type of plant grown in it's natural environment. The both plants will look almost identical but the true essence of the plant will be much stronger in the one grown in it's natural environment.
Even when plants are grown in good quality soil but in a synthetic environment, their therapeutic benefits are still severely compromised.
To make things even more complicated, two identical plants can grow naturally in two different environments and end up having different therapeutic benefits depending on where they're grown. This is what makes some essential oils so much more effective than others even though they're both considered pure.
When a company tells you their essential oil is 100% pure therapeutic grade, they can be telling the truth but that still does not mean you are getting the best therapeutic grade available. It simply means the essential oil is from the plant and not diluted. It doesn't tell you how the plant was grown or harvested, nor does it tell you where the plant was grown or what environment it was grown in.
Our essential oils are naturally sourced from all around the world where they are carefully grown and ethically produced in their natural environments, free from pesticides and chemical fertilizers, to ensure the therapeutic benefits are of the highest quality. Certificate of Analysis, Specifications and MSDS are available on request.
